It’s an interesting thing—the reality that our outlook on things has such a grand impact on outcomes. In essence, we speak our truths (affirmation) to the world—at least—the truths we want to accept. Now, at first glance we may not want to believe that when we speak negatively of something that we want it to be so, and a lot of people would agree with this, but doing so means taking the side of the sight-seer. As will be later discussed, the alternative side is visionary.
Many of us grew up around people who felt that life has always been in control of them, and that they can’t really be helped. These same people will blame their circumstances for their own thoughts and behaviors. “I’m tired. I’m unattractive. I have a problem. I can’t do X because of Y.” These are negative affirmations, and the only use they have is suppressing your potential. You see, when we negatively affirm something, we are essentially capping capability. Want proof? Start paying close attention to peoples’ affirmations; you’ll quickly notice how their words match their presence, and how your perception of them is shaped. Some things are simply just grim or can’t be helped? Let’s unpackage that thought. Let’s use positive affirmations.
If in fact something is so dreadful that it in itself cannot change, nor be changed by you or anyone else, you’re left with a marvelous opportunity to grow. Just as a seed must endure isolation and pressure to one day develop in to a beautiful plant, so too must you endure challenges and upsets to develop the strength of character needed to become the powerful individual you were always meant to become. “I’m not tired; I have more in me. I’m not unattractive; Sure, I have faults just like anyone else, and I own my look. I don’t have a problem; I have an opportunity to grow. I am not limited by Y; I can do X because I am me.”
Next time you catch yourself negatively affirming something, pause and take a deep breathe, then be the visionary—announce a positive affirmation. You can do this anywhere, anytime. For example, if you’re stuck in a long line and it’s moving slowly, announce to yourself that this is an opportunity to clear your mind of any and all frustrations. Once you begin doing this, you’ll feel at ease and realize how many people seem pessimistic and stressed. Don’t blame them, most humans are naturally quick to pick up negative thing, but you are not most. You see opportunity.
I had a realization today. In most cases, good leaders seem to be the exception rather than the rule. This… Read More
